THE 2006 REUNION REPORT

The BIG Cullowhee High School reunion for EVERYONE who ever attended or taught at any of the Cullowhee High Schools was a BIG success!!! The festivities were held Friday and Saturday, August 4th and 5th in Cullowhee. Former students came from as far away as Texas, New Mexico, Arizona, and California.

FRIDAY'S PICNIC August 4, 2006
On Friday a crowd of about 300 gathered at Western Carolina University picnic area to visit, reminisce, take pictures, hug, and just enjoy being around friends, teachers and classmates. The picnic supper was catered by Granny's Restaurant from Cherokee and everyone seemed to enjoy the hot dogs, hamburgers and all of the trimmings while a band played mountain music.

SATURDAY'S EVENTS August 5, 2006

Registration and Displays
On Saturday morning approximately 400 former students and faculty began gathering at the Cullowhee Valley School at 9 AM to visit and view the picture posters from many classes and everyone received a directory listing all students and faculty with addresses, a list of the deceased, and a list of students who have been lost. NO address available (see list on the web site). Jackson County Genealogical Society and the Historical Society also had displays in the school lobby.

Recognitions and Presentations

A formal program was held in the gymnasium at 11 AM with Manley Brown of the class of 1958 presiding. Frankie Dills Reynolds, class of 1962 welcomed everyone and recognized the superintendent of Jackson County Schools, Sue Nations, who also welcomed the group to Cullowhee Valley School. Reverend Jeff Powell, class of 1987, pastor of Tuckasegee Wesleyan Church gave the invocation. Nancy Potts Coward, a former English teacher at Cullowhee High, honored those who are deceased. *Kimberly J. Shuler presented the special music, singing two selections which she composed ("Valley of the Lilies" or the "Cullowhee Song" and also "There's the Mountains" and then she sang very moving "God Bless the USA" and everyone stood.
Fred Harris, a former teacher and administrator, recognized all of the former teachers and administrators who were present. He also recognized Marie Dills Smith, class 1934, who was the oldest alumna in attendance; the families with the most members in attendance; those who traveled the greatest distance; and the members of the Reunion Planning Committee. He also gave a SPECIAL thank you to the superintendent and also the principal of Cullowhee Valley School, Mr. Nathan Frizzell, the WCU Development Foundation, the Sylva Wal-mart, Coca-Cola Bottling Company, Southwestern Community College, Melton-Riddle and Moody Funeral Homes for providing tents for the picnic, and to Richard Ingle who designed the CHS Web Site. Also a thank you goes to New Meridian Technologies of Waynesville for their assistance.

Scholarship Fund

Mr. Jesse Flake, class of 1948 and former teacher, along with Lila Bryson Buchanan, class of 1968, gave a report about the CHS Alumni Scholarship Fund. Financial Report and Other Announcements and Activities

Following the information about the scholarship fund, Linda Wilkes Haney, class of 1965, gave the financial report. She was very appreciative of the positive response of individuals who were SPONSORS of this reunion. There is a list in the directory.
Ella Mae (Mutt) Moss Morris, class of 1938) was honored for all of her hard work as chair-person of the reunion planning committee for all three of the BIG CHS reunions; 2000, 2003 and 2006. She was presented a picture of a local mountain scene from the reunion planning committee.
Frankie Dills Reynolds made an announcement about the importance of trying to get the name of Cordelia Camp given back to the Outreach Center. (see letter that you can send to the Board of Trustees) on this site with list of trustees.
Jo Renfro Roberts, class 1963 made some announcements about trying to be organized with keeping the database up-to-date and having CLASS REPRESENTATIVES to help keep up with EACH class. EVERYONE was asked to carefully check the directory and let us know of ANY needed corrections. If everyone would check their yearbook/Annual to be sure that EVERYONE is included in the Directory who SHOULD be.
We then all stood and sang the Cullowhee Alma Mater and dismissed for lunch.
